High Cholesterol Foods To Avoid
Delicious. Savory. Sweet. Spicy. These are just a few words out of millions to describe our
every day foods. Ones that probably don’t come to mind as often are ones like cholesterol, trans fat, saturated fat
and unhealthy. On average, one in six adults is likely to have high cholesterol. Maybe now is the time to watch
what foods we eat and what high cholesterol foods to avoid.
The number one food that comes to mind when I think of cholesterol is eggs. The American Heart Association
recommends a limit of 300 mg of cholesterol per day and just one single egg contains 213 mg. That is more than two
thirds of the daily recommended amount. Also, bacon is high in saturated fat which contributes greatly to high
cholesterol. Perhaps instead of bacon and eggs in the mornings, you can try oatmeal. It’s high in fiber and
proven to help lower cholesterol.
Fast food. It’s convenient and cheap and for people on the go, it’s an every day choice. Burgers at your typical
fast food joint average around 175 mg of cholesterol. After just a few minutes and a couple of tasty bites, you
have already devoured more than half of what is suggested. Try opting for a salad next time with low fat
dressing.
Some people think cheese is good on almost anything and I tend to agree. Unfortunately though, cheese, along
with other whole dairy products such as milk and butter, are loaded with saturated fats and cholesterol. Saturated
fat is one of the main causes in high blood cholesterol. It would be nearly impossible to stay away from dairy
completely, but perhaps cutting back on your daily intake will help you to lower your cholesterol.
Ice cream is such a happy food. Some eat it to celebrate while others eat it to grieve. No matter what the
circumstances, it tastes amazing. Here is the downfall: one scoop of ice cream has more cholesterol than ten glazed
doughnuts. That’s almost a dozen doughnuts! Try some frozen yogurt next time as a tasty, yet healthy,
alternative.
If I could only choose one food to eat for the rest of my life, it would be steak. Rib-eye, tenderloin, new york
strip; you name it and I’ll eat it. All red meats should be eaten in moderation, but when it comes to high
cholesterol, you should avoid the fattier meats like the rib-eye. Instead, go for leaner cuts like the filet or
sirloin. When it comes to meat whether its chicken, beef or pork, the way it’s cooked also matters. Grilled, baked
or broiled meat is always a healthier option than fried.
Grocery stores provide us with many options, but it’s up to us to choose what is best for our bodies. Cakes,
cookies, potato chips and candy are always a tasty treat but are very high in trans fat, which can result in high
cholesterol. Next time you are at the store, keep in mind what high cholesterol foods you should avoid and what
healthy options to consider instead.
